How the 3D Lettering on a Collaboration Hoodie Is Made: A FILA × Wilson Toothbrush Embroidery Case Study

Release time:2026-10-05page views:

FILA × Wilson collaboration hoodie front, 3D toothbrush embroidery lettering (front and back)

Whether a collaboration hoodie becomes a hit depends on design and quality in equal measure. The COURT LUXE 1911 hoodie released jointly by FILA and Wilson carries a full row of plump, dimensional Wilson letters across the front — the visual core that makes the whole garment “stand up”, and those letters were produced with toothbrush (vertical pile) embroidery. Below, we look back in full at how the 3D lettering on this collaboration hoodie was made, from the processor's side.

1. Why collaboration pieces test embroidery processing hardest

A collaboration sells not only a cut but the image of two brands. Large front lettering stitched right across the chest is the visual focus of the garment and no flaw can hide: the lines must be crisp, the pile full, the hand feel soft and every batch consistent. That demands noticeably more of embroidery processing than ordinary garment embroidery — ordinary flat embroidery simply lies flat on the fabric and cannot deliver the dimensional, premium look the brand wants.

2. Four embroidery challenges in this hoodie

Once we had the artwork, we identified four hurdles:

  • The letters are large with thick strokes and need obvious dimensional relief, which flat embroidery cannot achieve;
  • The letters are solid, large blocks, so the edges have to be clean and sharp rather than fuzzy;
  • The hoodie fabric is loop-back fleece (or brushed fleece) — a soft, elastic base that easily deforms and wrinkles after embroidery;
  • Collaboration pieces run in volume, so thousands of units must be consistent batch after batch.

Those four hurdles fall precisely in toothbrush embroidery's strong zone.

3. The toothbrush embroidery approach: making the letters stand up

Toothbrush embroidery is also called vertical pile, flocking, turf or tufting embroidery; the core idea is to make the thread stand up into columns with a full, plump surface that springs back when pressed and has real texture — hence the nickname “toothbrush”.

For these Wilson letters the production flow runs roughly in five steps:

  1. First, density-compensated punching, so the stitch paths cover the large letter blocks completely;
  2. Then machine embroidery with single-sided upright thread, so the thread stands up on the fabric;
  3. Then heat-locking at the back, pinning the root of every pile column — this is the key to a soft, shed-resistant finish;
  4. Next, CNC pile shearing to trim the surface to a uniform height;
  5. Finally, dust removal, setting and full inspection.

Pile height is normally adjustable between 1.0–10.0mm; on this hoodie's front letters 2.0–3.5mm is typical, which stands up without looking bulky. Bright or contrasting thread on a dark ground makes the letter outlines clearer and the 3D effect obvious at a glance. For a fuller explanation of how toothbrush embroidery works and its specifications, see our toothbrush embroidery guide.

4. Result and quality: dimensional, soft, hard-wearing

The finished front lettering is full and dimensional with clean edges, soft to the touch with no hard patches. Because every pile column is locked at the root, normal wear and washing are unlikely to make it shed or unravel. On consistency, we keep reference samples from punching through to finishing to make sure height, hand feel and colour stay essentially the same between batches. The factory currently runs 30+ specialised computerised embroidery machines with an annual capacity of 1.5 million pieces, so it can take on volume orders for this kind of collaboration piece.

5. Why it can become a classic

“Adding colour to fashion, making every product a classic” is what we have always insisted on in embroidery. The dimensional lettering on a collaboration hoodie looks like decoration, but it decides whether the garment has real quality. Do the craft properly and the product stands up to the market and to consumers — which is why Dobest keeps investing in special techniques such as toothbrush embroidery.

6. What we can take on

If you also need dimensional letters or graphics embroidered on collaboration pieces, hoodies, sweatshirts or kidswear, we can take it from sampling to bulk production as one package:

  • MOQ 300 pieces;
  • Up to 3 simple samples free; complex samples are charged and deductible against the order once the 300-piece MOQ is reached;
  • Sampling in 24–48 hours, 3–4 working days for complex or combined techniques;
  • Bulk lead times normally 5–10 working days, with rush orders scheduled first.

We can meet customers on site in Dongguan, Shenzhen, Foshan (including Shunde), Zhongshan, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Huizhou and Jiangmen; in Guangzhou city and its surroundings (Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe, Baiyun, Huangpu, Panyu, Huadu, Nansha, Conghua, Zengcheng) and in Dongguan itself (Humen, Houjie, Chang'an, Dalang, Changping, Dalingshan, Shipai, Chashan, Tangxia, Liaobu, Dongcheng, Nancheng, Wanjiang and other towns), we can usually arrive within half a day.
